September 14, 2017, Toronto, Ontario, Canada – The Canadian Space Commerce Association (CSCA), Canada’s national space industry association, released the following statement in recognition of the Federal Government’s initiatives that have resulted in $515 Million in new research funds through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSErC) 2017 Discovery Grants Program, plus scholarships and fellowships to support 4,000 researchers and 71 institutions across the country.
“This is an important commitment by the Federal Government in support of our national scientific and engineering community ,” said Michelle Mendes, Executive Director and President of the CSCA. “Many of those supported by this program today are tomorrow’s leading innovators, entrepreneurs, industrialists, researchers and scientists. Through this kind of investment the Government of Canada is securing a strong economic future in space and other science dependant sectors .”
“The program is also in keeping with the recent Space Advisory Board Report: ‘Consultations on Space: What We Heard’, released in August,” said Mendes. “This balanced and broad science and engineering investment will fuel education and skills development, directly enhance the Canadian space sector’s capacity and capabilities to compete in the global space sector and answer an industry-wide call to action to provide immediate support to NSERC programming.”
As stated in the Federal Government’s announcement: “Overall $515 million announced by Minister Duncan last week that will go to support the work of more than 4,000 researchers at 71 institutions across Canada. This is NSERC’s largest annual investment, which assists researchers by offering financial support through scholarships, fellowships, research supplements and equipment grants. The funds will support scientists, engineers and graduate students working in a variety of disciplines, such as astronomy, chemistry, biology, mathematics, medicine and physics. Those who receive NSERC’s support through the Discovery Grants Program will be empowered to make new breakthroughs while providing the next generation of students with the skills they need for their future careers.”
