Rotman School of Management. Professor Stolarick will be discussing the the role of sub-national factors (such as location, place and city-regions) in global economic prosperity and how this relates to the Canadian space systems industry and the larger aerospace industry.

The CSCA at the Canadian Space Summit

Our next CSCA event is being held in conjunction with the Canadian Space Summit in Calgary, Alberta on November 23rd – 25th.

CSCA Director Farnaz Ghadaki is chairing the November 23rd commerce and commercialization sessions and has lined up an informative and topical series of speakers including Nathan Armstrong, the advisor for advanced manufacturing with the Alberta Space Program and president of Motive Industries; Chris Gainor, Canadian space historian and author of Arrows to the Moon: Avro’s Engineers and the Space Race; Nicole Geske, the operations manager at Lethbridge based data centre services provider BlackBridge Networks; Chuck Black, CSCA treasurer and writer/editor of the Commercial Space Blog; Jan Christopher Arp with Euroconsult North America; Jonathan Beland with Futron Corporation; and Natasha Rhodes, a travel advisor and “accredited space travel agent” for Virgin Galactic at the Vision 2000 Travel Group, who will be speaking in conjunction with Stephen Attenborough, the commercial director for suborbital spacecraft providers Virgin Galactic.

Speaker Announced for November 10th CSCA meeting

Our guest speaker is Bryan Pilon, a project engineer for Cesaroni Technology who  will be discussing the development of a novel stage-combustion aft-injected hybrid (SCAIH) propulsion system for a small Canadian rocket launcher.

India Overtakes Canada in Space: Report

The Canadian Press has  reported on the 2011 Futron Space Competitiveness Index (the topic of our September 8th, 2011 CSCA bimonthly meeting) in the September 10th, 2011 article “India Overtakes Canada in Space: Report.”

The article quotes David Vaccaro, program manager for Futron Corporation, as stating that the index shows Canada has slipped behind India and is being challenged hard by Brazil, China, Israel, Japan and South Korea.

My sense is that what’s really happening is that as other countries start to move up, Canada has lost relative positional strength because other countries have started to advance faster,” he told The Canadian Press.

The article also quotes CSCA treasurer Chuck Black and Canadian Space Society President Kevin Shortt.

This is the end of day panel discussion which finished off the March 19th, 2011 Canadian Space Commerce Association (CSCA) conference and annual general meeting. It focused on “the Next Breakthrough Space Technologies for Canada and took place at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, Ontario.

CSCA Treasurer Chuck Black acted as host for the discussion. Other participants, from left to right included:

Topics discussed include:

  • The growing Canadian expertise in micro-satellites.
  • New initiatives in space science,  new sensors and exploration tools.
  • Department of National Defense (DND) activities related to northern sovereignty and how these activities act as drivers to help grow the space systems industry.
  • Oher growth drivers that are starting to attract government funding and attention including Earth imaging and private initiatives such as on-orbit satellite servicing.
  • The growing possibilities now that launch costs are finally beginning to shrink.

Canada has played a key role in developing critical technologies for the space sector for more than 50 years.

But as more countries spend an increasing amount of money on space technology such as satellite development, and while Canada finds itself in an increasingly competitive business field. So what then are the technologies that Canada can lead in, now and in the future?
